Body Image.
I would like to personally thank GK, my muse and sounding board for this post, and also a lovely small woman who shares my opinion whole-heartedly.
A while ago, a fellow blogger posted about body image, particularly in the media. It stemmed around a starlet pictured in a bikini looking thinner than she usually looked.
And thus, as usual, the assault on skinny began.
Several times in the post, the soul-crushing phrase real women have curves was uttered.
Is that REALLY what weve been reduced to? Insult those who dont look like you?
That seems like a really backwards way to further body image. Insult those smaller than you.
Im a small woman. 96 pounds. I also eat like a tank. And I dont worry about what I look like. I realize its appealing; hot, even. But Im not doing damage to myself to maintain it. Its JUST the way I look.
And to me, thats as REAL as someone can get.
Can we PLEASE replace that AWFUL phrase with Real Women Are Happy With Their Bodies.?
Lets take, for example, a local strip club here in Austin. They are having a competition, as most strip clubs do, for extra revenue into the club.
This particular contest is dubbed The Itty Bitty Titty Dance Contest.
At first, it sounds TOTALLY cute, right? There would be substantially less boobie shaking, and lots of cute perky boobies, and more reason to focus on asses, and tummies.
However, things take a saddening turn when you hear that the winner gets a $4000 gift card towards a boob job. Not $4000 cash to use any way they likebut $4000 to fix the DISPARITY that is a B-Cup or Smaller (entry rules).
So really? Why the assault on skinny girls?
If were not curvy, we get called anorexic, and reminded again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again that real women have curves; so, fuck you, skinny girl you dont count! And our curveless bodies are reminded by BUSINESS OWNERS that its so terrible to be small that they are willing to give you THOUSANDS of dollars to remedy the tragedy that is small boobs.
Do you realize that small women face the SAME body issues that big women face? Do you realize that telling a skinny girl to eat a sandwich is JUST as painful as telling a big girl to get on a treadmill?
Some people are just small. Thats JUST how their body chemistry is.
I eat like a TANK. A TANK! But Im STILL below 100 pounds. Ill ALWAYS be below 100 pounds. The only time I WASNT was when I was pregnant, but even then, all I gained was like 14 pounds. And it all fell off right after she was delivered.
My mom is the same way, and several women I know are the same, as well!
Theres no sense in fighting our natural shapes, that JUST the way we are.
Are there women who are skinny for the wrong reasons? Sure there are! Theres a chunk of women who FORCE themselves to be underweight, but make NO mistake, being underweight doesnt DICTATE or REQUIRE that said woman has an eating disorder, or that YOU, as anyone OTHER than a skinny girl has ANY right to cast judgment.
There are plenty of us who are skinny, healthy, and happy.
Let us have that.
Dont promote your own body image at the cost of making the skinny girls feel bad.
Here, enjoy some skinny girls. TELL me they arent sexy!
