Why I'm Not Knocking Down Armond White This Time
To paraphrase the famous line from William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar in which Marc Anthony says at Caesar's eulogy," I have not come to bury Armond White but to praise him" In the past I have always taken to task famed controversial film reviewer Armond White of the weekly tabloid New York Press in my blog for his biased movie reviews and for good reason.
But this week after reading White's article regarding his views about the films released so far in 2011,I have to be totally honest with myself and admit that White is spot on on his views regarding the films of 2011 and in his selection of what the best films of this year are with a few exceptions on my part.White's comments in his article that there has been some very good films this year which have been in the most part independent film productions contrary to the usual Hollywood big budgeted blockbusters as well as foreign films by such masters as Goddard and Odon but such films didn't have the same advantage of being promoted in the same way as the typical Hollywood blockbuster is totally correct.Especially in the case that these good little films disappear from the movie marketplace too soon compared with these Hollywood blockbusters. But at least White in his article, says that he is optomistic that there are still good films to be seen this year contrary to his usual pessimistic view about movies in Hollywood.
The only thing I don't agree with White in his article regarding his selections of the best films so far in 2011 are of course some of his film selections which clearly demonstrate his usual insincere critical bias and penchant to be controversial for controversy's sake. In anybody's right mind, there is no way that Michael Gondry's THE GREEN HORNET(2011) is the best film adaption of a comic book character as White proclaims since it's so obvious that he only favors the film because it was directed by one of White's favorite film director, Michael Gondry. The same thing applies to David Gordon Green's horrendous fantasy YOUR HIGHNESS (2011) which was a box office bomb since Green is another White favorite and in his opinion, Green can't do no wrong.
But at least White demonstrates in a rare occasion that he has the chops of being a good film critic without almost relying on his usual tics of being controversial just for the sake of being able to demonstrate that he is a angry film critic rebel. I also found hilarious the sub article that accompanies White's article in the paper which features the Twitter tweets by a Armond White impostor since those tweets do suspiciously sound like they came from Mr.White himself!
