Why Are DC Comics and Marvel Killing Off Their Superheroes?
By now, you comicbook fans must have just heard the latest news for Marvel Comic Book Enterprises regarding the definite future of their most popular comicbook superhero, the Amazing Spider Man and his alter ego,Peter Parker. In other words,Marvel has decided to kill off the original Spider Man,Peter Parker in the latest issue of The Ultimate Spider Man that comes out this Wednesday, although this comic takes place in an "alternate comic book universe" different than the one in which the other Marvel Spider Man comic books such as The Amazing Spider Man, The Spectacular Spider Man and Peter Parker:Spider Man occurs in
But still to a longtime Marvel comicbook fan like myself that has followed the exploits of Peter Parker and Spider Man since his origins back in 1962, this decision to kill off Marvel Comic's most popular superhero reeks of economic desperation and fear of lagging sales on part of Marvel regarding Spider Man and their comic book line in general that the company is forced to use the death of their superheros to reboot interest and sales in their comic book line. About a couple of months ago, Marvel Comic announced that they would kill off one of the original traditional members of The Fantastic Four, their first superhero team which consists of Reed Richards(Mr Fantastic), Sue Storm(Invisible Girl), Johnny Storm(Human Torch) and Ben Grimm(the Thing) in an recent issue of the FF comic. Also about five years ago Marvel killed off the original Captain America aka Steve Rogers in his own comic book, only to miraculously revive the character to reboot sales of the comic book when the assassination ploy didn't work
But Marvel isn't the only comic book company to kill off it's superheros in order to see more comic books since DC Comics in the 1990's were the first ones to first kill off Superman by the hands of the alien creature Doomsday, only to revive him a year later. The same thing happened with Batman, when the character's back was broken by master villain Bane leaving the Caped Crusader a quadriplegic cripple. But due to popular demand, the original Batman was back a few months later when submitted to a miraculous back surgery . Both Marvel and DC Comics have recurred to this old ploy of somewhat killing their most popular superhero characters only to bring them back to life when it suits their company best and most importantly when it suits the sales of their comicbooks. I really don't think that with the recent popularity of the new Broadway play on Spider Man as well as the new reboot of the Spider Man film franchise next year when the new Spider Man movie restarts the whole series all over again, that Marvel will permanently kill off the original Spider Man, Peter Parker. Before we know it,old Spidey and his alter ego Peter Parker will be back in the comics just in time for the release of the next Spider Man film next Summer of 2012!
